Senior Materials Testing Engineer

Job Description

Rivian is seeking a Materials Testing Engineer to join the Failure Analysis and Materials Engineering team, contributing to the development and validation of materials across all product lines.

Requirements

• 4+ years of experience in materials testing
• BS or MS in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or another relevant field
• Expert level knowledge in mechanical testing including High Speed Tensile testing, Fatigue, tension, compression, shear, peel
• Experience with Finite Element Analysis, material modeling, and computational analysis of materials
• Experience with industry material testing specifications (ASTM, ISO, AWS, etc.)
• Experience with material property databases such as Ansys Granta or Applus Matereality
• Knowledge of mechanical metallurgy, fracture mechanics, and automotive structures
• Familiarity with steel and aluminum alloys, polymers, and polymer chemistry
• Desire to promote health and safety in the laboratory

Responsibilities

• Perform materials testing and validation on materials from Rivian shops
• Communicate and develop testing strategies with engineers, designers, and manufacturing
• Establish test parameters for unique situations
• Design and manufacture testing samples and fixtures
• Analyze fixture design impact on testing results
• Draft drawings for fixtures and test specimens
• Write and maintain materials testing specifications
• Process and analyze testing data, produce reports
• Present technical data to cross-functional teams
• Manage work requests in LIMS (JIRA)
• Set work priorities for lab team
• Build and maintain material property database
• Oversee equipment maintenance and calibration
• Safely operate metallographic laboratory equipment
