Job Description

Join Tesla as a Mechanical Engineer to develop mechanical analysis methods for battery cell design and performance improvement, working alongside engineering and manufacturing teams.

Requirements

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Math, or equivalent experience
  • Experience in test development, execution, and analysis
  • Knowledge of solid mechanics and material behavior
  • Data analysis skills in a scripting language (Python, MATLAB, or equivalent)
  • Finite-element solver (Abaqus, LS-Dyna, etc.) recommended
  • Cell cycling and/or stress-strain testing recommended
  • Experience in equipment design or CAD a strong plus
  • Strong communication skills and preference for working in teams

Responsibilities

  • Advance the capabilities of Tesla’s in-house cell models
  • Provide simplified free-body diagrams for complex cell and battery pack configurations
  • Apply cell and material test data to models
  • Perform component/cell level mechanical tests
  • Develop new test methods and models for complex loading and boundary conditions
  • Consolidate results into consistent workflow for higher level mechanical simulations
  • Document and communicate best practices, important test results, and fundamental understanding across teams
  • Be part of a cross-functional product development team to determine ideal cell design for electric vehicle and energy product applications
