Job Description

The engineer will develop and maintain advanced physics-based models for lithium-ion cells, focusing on mechanical behaviors and coupled interactions. They will also design experiments for testing and validation, collaborating with cross-functional teams to implement innovative designs.

Requirements

Degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or equivalent experience
Strong background in solid mechanics, especially in elasticity, plasticity, plate and shell, and fracture mechanics
Strong background in finite element theory and material constitutive models
Experience in Finite Element model generation, development, execution, and validation (Abaqus, LS-DYNA, or equivalent)
Data analysis skills in a scripting language (Python, MATLAB, or equivalent)
Experience in test development, execution, and analysis
Experience in material characterization and modeling
Knowledge of battery cell mechanics
Some experience in solving multi-physics models in the mechanical engineering discipline is preferred
Strong communication skills and a preference for working in teams

Responsibilities

Advance the capabilities of Tesla’s cell mechanical models
Develop 3D cell models to capture the fundamental physics
Propose appropriate cell test plans and perform model validations using experimental test data
Enhance the accuracy of Tesla’s in-house and vendor cell models
Contribute to the automation of cell modeling workflow
Develop and perform component/cell-level mechanical tests and material characterizations
Interface with the cross-functional teams to determine ideal cell designs for different electric vehicle and energy product applications
