Job Description

Rivian is seeking a Staff Power Electronics Controls Engineer to develop intelligent control systems for electric vehicles and energy applications. The role involves designing control algorithms, validating them through testing, and collaborating with a diverse team to create innovative power conversion systems.

Requirements

  • An MSc or PhD in Electrical Engineering specializing in Power Electronics or Controls (MSc with 3+ years of experience, PhD is a plus).
  • Strong theoretical and practical understanding of power electronics control, including AC/DC, DC/AC, and DC/DC resonant converter topologies.
  • Ability to develop robust control algorithms from scratch, covering software architecture, implementation, integration, and testing.
  • Experience in developing, implementing, and verifying control algorithms for switching power converters using simulation and hardware platforms.
  • Expertise in MATLAB/Simulink and experience with power converter modeling tools (e.g., PLECS) and real-time simulation platforms.
  • Solid programming skills in C/C++ and Python, focusing on writing high-quality code for embedded systems.
  • Proactive, self-driven attitude with strong attention to detail and ability to thrive in a dynamic, deadline-oriented environment.

Responsibilities

  • Designing and optimizing control algorithms for power electronics applications, including EV chargers and onboard vehicle power.
  • Utilizing advanced simulation tools to evaluate circuit topologies and components for optimal performance.
  • Translating application requirements into clear and effective controller specifications.
  • Developing and implementing novel control strategies at both the system and component levels.
  • Testing and troubleshooting control algorithms in simulated and physical hardware environments.
  • Creating detailed power electronics models to analyze and verify controller performance.
  • Defining comprehensive tests to validate algorithms and their interaction with other system features.
  • Collaborating closely with system, electrical, and software engineers.

Benefits

  • Employees at Rivian are often offered comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance, a 401(k) with company match, ESPP and potential RSU grants, performance bonuses, and generous time off including paid parental and sick leave. Perks can include 24/7 mental-health coaching and therapy, Hinge Health for Anthem enrollees, tuition assistance and professional development, plus on-site food and a wide range of employee discounts on items like computers, mobile phones, home loans, and pet care.
