The Field Applications Engineer will act as a technical specialist in the Solar Products Engineering organization, focusing on residential retrofit hardware installations and Tesla Solar Roof deployments. This role requires strong engineering skills and field leadership to drive process improvements and collaborate with various teams to resolve challenges and enhance product designs.
Requirements
- 5-7+ years of direct, hands-on experience in residential rooftop PV installations, including complex retrofits and full-system integrations
- 4+ years of specialized experience installing and commissioning Tesla Powerwall systems or equivalent residential energy storage
- Proven track record in field leadership roles, demonstrating project coordination and team management
- Strong engineering mindset with first-principles problem-solving abilities
- In-depth expertise in residential construction, roofing systems, general electrical systems, and energy storage safety protocols
- Excellent communication skills for presenting technical insights to diverse audiences
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and collaborative tools
- Demonstrated proficiency in metrics tracking, data analysis, and time/motion studies
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or equivalent practical experience
- Preferred Tesla Certified Installer status, NABCEP certification, or related credentials
Responsibilities
- Lead the prioritization, design, execution, and reporting of complex field tests and validations across Solar Roof and retrofit PV systems
- Conduct in-depth evaluations of prototypes, systems, and installation methodologies for compliance with safety codes and Tesla specifications
- Proactively identify, troubleshoot, and resolve systemic installation and deployment challenges
- Spearhead new product pilot field installations and high-visibility deployments
- Design, develop, and deliver advanced training programs for internal teams and external partners
- Perform hands-on, full-scale system builds and field demonstrations of next-generation solar products
- Act as the organization-wide subject matter expert on product installation and retrofit processes
- Track, analyze and report on installation metrics and conduct time and motion studies
- Champion continuous improvement initiatives by forming cross-functional teams
