Job Description

The Tesla Energy Products team is seeking a design lead for the Thermal Architecture team to define and design thermal systems for products like Megapack, Supercharger, and Powerwall. This role requires collaboration across various teams and the application of engineering fundamentals to model and design thermal systems critical to Tesla's success.

Requirements

  • Fluency in the use of analytical simulation tools for thermal analysis, including Matlab/Simulink and CFD software
  • Experience modeling and testing thermal components, examples include fans, pumps, compressors, fluid connections, heat sinks, heat exchangers
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • 3+ years of experience with detailed compression cycle modeling
  • Strong fundamentals in compression cycle modeling and operation
  • Strong fundamentals in heat transfer, thermodynamics and fluid mechanics
  • Demonstrable motivation and ability to solve novel, difficult thermal design problems
  • CFD Modeling experience
  • Passion for renewable energy

Responsibilities

  • Support programs through the entire life cycle including requirements development, modeling, prototype builds, test, and production
  • Develop thermal models to simulate system performance of HVAC components to meet system requirements while optimizing for efficiency and cost
  • Perform high level system tradeoffs between different thermal design solutions to optimize for battery life and system cost
  • Develop and execute component and subsystem design verification plans and test methods to validate product adherence to requirements
  • Create CFD models to aid mechanical design teams in component development or gain insight into system level thermal trade offs
