JobsSr. Materials Engineer, Cell Materials Qualification
Job description
The active materials research team at Tesla is looking for an experienced Materials Engineer to develop and validate next-generation battery materials. The role involves sourcing and qualifying materials that enhance energy density, durability, and cost-effectiveness, while collaborating with various teams to integrate these materials into large-format cells.
Requirements
- Degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience
- Hands-on experience with anode and cathode materials synthesis and qualification
- Familiarity with battery electrode stack design, including optimization of mass loading, electrode thickness, and N/P ratio
- Proficiency with materials characterization and electrochemical testing techniques (XRD, SEM, ICP, BET, EIS, GITT)
- Demonstrated ability to perform root-cause analysis and resolve interfacial 'cross-talk' between cathode, electrolyte, and anode
- Practical experience in cell fabrication, including slurry coating, coin-cell and pouch-cell assembly
- Strong programming skills (Python, MATLAB, or similar) for processing and analyzing battery test data
- Working knowledge of chemical reaction kinetics, unit operation, heat and mass transfer, and condensed matter physics is a plus
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with strong problem-solving ability
Responsibilities
- Stay at the forefront of battery materials research and lead qualification studies for integrating new technologies
- Source and qualify high-performance, cost-effective cathode materials
- Maintain detailed documentation of R&D progress and present findings to leadership
- Design and execute experiments and validation tests to assess material performance
- Collaborate closely with validation engineers, manufacturing teams, and vendor development teams to scale up new materials
Benefits
- Employees at Tesla are often offered day-one coverage with multiple medical options (some at $0 paycheck cost), dental/vision, company HSA contributions, a 401(k) match, and equity programs. Most roles also include paid time off and holidays, family-building support, employee assistance, commuter and childcare benefits, and access to discounts and wellness programs.
