Job description
Tesla's Cell Engineering Team is seeking a motivated electrode engineer to lead material validation and process development for dry battery electrode technology. This role involves working with cross-functional teams to transition early-stage concepts to production, making significant contributions to Tesla's battery cell products.
Requirements
- Degree or Equivalent Experience in Materials Science & Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Industrial Engineering
- Ability to design and execute new material evaluation and define the correlation between material property and electrode performance
- Ability to identify root causes and conduct troubleshooting to solve technical problems
- Strong knowledge of electrochemistry or applied electrochemistry or electrochemical engineering
- Broad knowledge and R&D experience on energy storage materials required
- Strong experience in material characterization and analytical technique required
- Excellent verbal and written communication, and detailed documentation skills
- Skilled at managing multiple projects and priorities simultaneously and ability to independently execute those priorities
- Self-motivated and a self-starter with hands-on skills
- Team oriented attitude required
Responsibilities
- Lead electrode and process development for Tesla dry battery electrode
- Design and validate new electrode material in lab scale process
- Perform systematic electrode processing experiments using formulations to identify key parameters for control over electrode product quality and electrochemical performance
- Analyze electrode performances and determine their relationship with materials and process parameters then take independent steps to iterate on electrode formulation and process improvement to reach target cell performance specifications
- Document electrode processing parameters and communicate key learnings to cross-functional teams to enable transition towards production development
- Work with manufacturing team to bring up mass production plants
- Work in the laboratory/shop environment with analytical equipment (SEM, TGA, FTIR, DSC, BET, resistivity meter, data logger, thermal sensing devices etc.)
- Read and review technology proceedings and papers to broaden knowledge, project future trends and propose directions in energy storage technology development
Benefits
- Employees at Tesla are often offered day-one coverage with multiple medical options (some at $0 paycheck cost), dental/vision, company HSA contributions, a 401(k) match, and equity programs. Most roles also include paid time off and holidays, family-building support, employee assistance, commuter and childcare benefits, and access to discounts and wellness programs.
