Job description

The Amazon Center for Quantum Computing is seeking an Instrument Control Engineer to join their software team. This role involves collaborating with experimental physics and control hardware development teams to create software that characterizes and operates quantum devices. The ideal candidate will translate scientific requirements into efficient software implementations, emphasizing teamwork and project ownership. The position offers the opportunity to work on cutting-edge quantum computing technologies within a diverse and inclusive environment.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of professional experience programming in a modern programming language such as Java, C++, C#, or Python.
  • PhD or Bachelor's degree with 6+ years of applied research experience.
  • 1+ years of experience with control systems for experimental quantum computing.
  • Experience working with scientists in a research environment.
  • Experience with the full software development life cycle, including coding standards and code reviews.
  • Experience with embedded software development, including low-level device driver or kernel development.
  • Experience with digital signal processing and RFSoC platforms.
  • Experience with standard communication interfaces such as USB, PCIe, and Ethernet.
  • Experience with compiler development, including optimizations or backend code generation.
  • Experience with low-latency networking technologies such as RDMA.
  • Experience with monitoring and telemetry platforms such as OpenTelemetry.

Responsibilities

  • Work with control hardware developers as a subject matter expert on software interfaces.
  • Collaborate with external control hardware vendors to refine integration strategies.
  • Implement instrument drivers and control logic in Python and/or low-level languages like C++ or Rust.
  • Contribute to the compiler backend for efficient execution of OpenQASM-based experiments.
  • Benchmark system performance and define key performance metrics.
  • Ensure successful integration of new features into the Python-based experimental software stack.
  • Partner with scientists to contribute to the codebase through mentorship and documentation.

Benefits

  • Employees at Amazon are often offered comprehensive health benefits—including multiple medical plan options (no pre-existing condition exclusions, 100% covered in-network preventive care), dental and vision plans, a 24/7 medical advice line from day one, expert second-opinion services, and broad mental-health support with several free counseling sessions (including pediatric). Financial wellness typically includes a 401(k) with company match (up to 2%), Restricted Stock Units (equity), FSAs, an emergency savings program, product and partner discounts, and even college-savings and home-purchase programs. Overall, the package is designed to support employees and their families’ health, finances, and day-to-day life.
