·FY 2025Job description
As a Sr./Staff Firmware Engineer on Amazon's Frontier AI & Robotics team, you will develop low-level firmware for in-house robotic actuators, bridging hardware and AI control systems. Your contributions will enable robots to operate effectively in real-world environments, making you a key player in a cutting-edge robotics program. The role involves collaborating with engineers across disciplines to ensure robust firmware design and implementation. You will also engage in debugging and testing to validate firmware performance and functionality.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Embedded Systems, or a related technical field
- 5+ years of professional embedded firmware development experience
- Proficiency in C and/or C++ for embedded/real-time systems
- Hands-on experience developing motor control firmware, including field-oriented control (FOC)
- Experience with hardware communication protocols relevant to actuator systems
- Demonstrated ability to debug firmware and hardware issues using tools such as oscilloscopes and logic analyzers
- Experience developing actuator firmware for robotic systems or high-performance motion control platforms
- Familiarity with proprioceptive sensing and torque estimation techniques in robots
- Experience with EtherCAT or other real-time industrial fieldbus protocols
- Knowledge of functional safety standards as applied to motor drive firmware
- Experience working in cross-functional hardware-software teams in fast-paced environments
Responsibilities
- Develop, test, and optimize embedded firmware for custom robotic actuators
- Design and implement real-time firmware for actuator state estimation and fault detection
- Collaborate with electronics and motor design engineers to define firmware requirements
- Develop and maintain firmware for field-oriented control and motor commutation
- Build and maintain firmware test frameworks and hardware-in-the-loop test environments
- Partner with controls engineers and AI researchers to support high-bandwidth communication
- Contribute to actuator firmware architecture decisions and maintain documentation
- Support rapid hardware bring-up and debugging of new actuator prototypes
Benefits
- Employees at Amazon are often offered comprehensive health benefits—including multiple medical plan options (no pre-existing condition exclusions, 100% covered in-network preventive care), dental and vision plans, a 24/7 medical advice line from day one, expert second-opinion services, and broad mental-health support with several free counseling sessions (including pediatric). Financial wellness typically includes a 401(k) with company match (up to 2%), Restricted Stock Units (equity), FSAs, an emergency savings program, product and partner discounts, and even college-savings and home-purchase programs. Overall, the package is designed to support employees and their families’ health, finances, and day-to-day life.
