Job description

The Director of the algorithms team will lead the development of foundational algorithms that enhance Apple's sensor hardware, impacting products like iPhone and Apple Watch. This role involves blending AI/ML techniques with traditional signal processing to deliver high-performance solutions. The director will guide the team in making architectural decisions and fostering a culture of innovation. Collaboration with cross-functional teams is essential to integrate solutions into sensor modules and ensure robust performance.

Requirements

  • BS/MS in a relevant technical discipline such as Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Applied Math.
  • 10+ years of industry experience in algorithm development with a proven track record of shipping products.
  • At least 5 years in a formal leadership role with experience in hiring and mentoring engineering talent.
  • Deep expertise in signal processing, image processing, estimation/inference, or machine learning.
  • Strong foundation in applied mathematics including linear algebra, probability, and optimization.
  • PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Math, Physics, AIML, or a related field.
  • Experience leading teams that have successfully shipped algorithms in high-volume consumer electronics.

Responsibilities

  • Set the vision for solving sensing problems and guide the team in architectural decisions.
  • Lead, grow, and mentor a team of algorithm engineers to foster innovation and technical excellence.
  • Oversee the development of software toolchains and methodologies for rapid algorithm development.
  • Drive cross-functional alignment and collaborate with HW Engineering, Firmware, and Software teams.
  • Define system-level specifications and deliver full algorithm solutions for production deployment.
  • Establish quantitative performance benchmarks for complex algorithms.
