Job description

The Distinguished Engineer role at Apple focuses on defining and leading the Quality Engineering and Performance strategy for the Wallet, Payments & Commerce (WPC) team. This position is critical for architecting systemic reliability, scalability, and resilience within Apple's financial services ecosystem. The role emphasizes influencing architecture and embedding reliability principles into platform design. The successful candidate will operate at scale, ensuring that systems meet user experience standards and regulatory requirements.

Requirements

  • Deep expertise in reliability engineering and performance engineering for distributed systems.
  • Experience defining SLO/SLA frameworks for mission-critical systems at massive scale.
  • Proven track record architecting resilience strategies across cloud-native environments.
  • Experience working with regulated financial or high-trust systems.
  • Strong background in observability, telemetry systems, and production validation strategies.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in payment systems, money movement, tokenization, or transaction processing.

Responsibilities

  • Define the long-term vision for Quality Engineering, Performance Engineering, Reliability, and Production Validation across WPC.
  • Architect systemic reliability frameworks spanning development, pre-production, and runtime environments.
  • Establish and govern SLO/SLA standards, latency budgets, scalability targets, and risk tolerance models.
  • Lead cross-organizational initiatives to embed 'quality by design' into distributed financial systems.
  • Partner with Architecture, Platform, Infrastructure, Security, Compliance, and Business teams to ensure systems meet both Apple’s user experience standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Mentor and grow senior technical leaders across global teams.

Benefits

  • Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage. Employees also see robust time off, Apple University learning and tuition reimbursement, donation matching and paid volunteer hours, and deep product and partner discounts.
