Job description

The role is for a lead engineer/architect in Apple's Storage Platforms organization, focusing on the Elastic Disk project. This team develops systems that store and protect Apple's data at scale, emphasizing durability, security, and high availability. The engineer will shape the features and architecture of Elastic Disk, setting the technical direction for replication and metadata systems. The position requires collaboration with a motivated team and offers the opportunity to work on large-scale distributed systems.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of professional software development experience building infrastructure, systems, or distributed services.
  • 5+ years designing, building, and operating large-scale distributed storage or database systems in production.
  • Deep expertise in at least one systems-level language, with strong proficiency in Rust, C++, or C preferred.
  • Strong fundamentals in distributed systems with a proven ability to reason about correctness under concurrency and failure.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a related engineering field, or equivalent experience.
  • MS or PhD in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Strong storage and database background, having led or been a core contributor to a distributed storage system, database, or storage engine at scale.
  • Hands-on experience implementing or extending consensus protocols in production.
  • Experience building block storage, distributed file systems, distributed databases, or replicated storage engines at scale.
  • Deep knowledge of data durability techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Own the technical vision for the Replication & Metadata Systems powering Elastic Disk.
  • Evolve the replication protocol to strengthen availability, correctness, and durability.
  • Advance end-to-end durability through next-generation repair and replication-metadata checksums.
  • Drive performance of the replication and network data path by profiling bottlenecks.
  • Raise the engineering bar through best practices of AI tooling and high standards for reviews and testing.
  • Represent the team in cross-organizational efforts to shape a unified replication foundation.
  • Mentor and grow engineers through design reviews and hands-on collaboration.

Benefits

  • Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage. Employees also see robust time off, Apple University learning and tuition reimbursement, donation matching and paid volunteer hours, and deep product and partner discounts.
