Job description

The Apple Manufacturing Design Engineer (MDE) plays a crucial role in developing mechanical manufacturing processes across Apple's global supply chain. This hands-on position requires collaboration with various teams, including Industrial Design and Product Design, to ensure the successful implementation of manufacturing solutions. MDEs are responsible for defining best-in-class processes and driving engineering issues to resolution. The role demands expertise in specific manufacturing areas such as CNC machining, surface finishing, glass processing, assembly, and painting.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of full-time mechanical manufacturing experience is required.
  • A BS, MS, or PhD in mechanical, manufacturing, or industrial engineering is necessary.
  • 25% domestic and international travel is required.
  • Demonstrated hands-on mechanical ability is essential.
  • Excellent written and verbal interpersonal skills are required.
  • Experience with highly cosmetic parts and in a manufacturing environment of consumer electronics or consumer plastic/sheet metal products is a plus.
  • Ability to define engineering tasks to meet project objectives and quickly learn about new processes with minimal information is necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Drive the development of key mechanical manufacturing processes across Apple's supply base.
  • Define best-in-class processes to meet all Apple design and operational requirements.
  • Develop and document processes including all parameters, consumables, and secondary operation requirements.
  • Collaborate with Global Supply Managers to establish supply chain requirements.
  • Provide leadership at manufacturing sites during development and product production ramp.
  • Use data to drive process decisions and conduct basic data analysis.
  • Identify, research, develop, and qualify premier equipment manufacturers and suppliers.
  • Define part tolerance and specifications by demonstrating process capability to Product Designers and Industrial Designers.
  • Lead process development in areas such as CNC machining, surface finishing, glass processing, assembly, and painting.
