Job description

The Health Sensing Hardware team is seeking a highly-motivated biomedical optics engineer to develop next-generation optical sensors for wearable devices like the Apple Watch and AirPods. This role focuses on measuring complex physiological signals in a compact form factor. The successful candidate will work closely with research scientists and hardware engineers to create research platforms and analyze user data. Strong communication skills are essential for summarizing findings and collaborating with cross-functional teams.

Requirements

  • BS in Biomedical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or a related field
  • MS/PhD in Biomedical, Optical Engineering or a related field
  • In-depth understanding of light propagation in biological tissue
  • Experience with hands-on development of optical systems for biomedical optics applications
  • Strong optical simulation skills using commercial ray-tracing packages
  • Experience with both coherent and non-coherent light-tissue interaction principles and their applications
  • Fundamental understanding of device physics governing typical light emitters and detectors
  • Conversant in cross-functional aspects of system design, including mechanical tolerance and sources of electrical noise

Responsibilities

  • Develop research platforms to investigate novel sensing solutions
  • Leverage modeling tools to enhance empirical observations
  • Define sensing requirements for multidisciplinary sensor architects
  • Design user studies and analyze data to empirically validate sensing solutions
  • Summarize findings and communicate them clearly to the larger team and senior leadership

Benefits

  • Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage. Employees also see robust time off, Apple University learning and tuition reimbursement, donation matching and paid volunteer hours, and deep product and partner discounts.
