Job description

The Applied Research Engineer will play a critical role in advancing Apple's Machine Translation technology, which connects people across language barriers. This position involves developing and optimizing scalable model assets for various languages used in Apple's translation products. The engineer will work within a dynamic team focused on managing data acquisition, training neural machine translation models, and enhancing translation quality. The role requires strong programming skills and a passion for building high-quality products for Apple's customers.

Requirements

  • Strong programming and software engineering skills in Python, C++, Java, or equivalent.
  • Good machine learning knowledge and modeling expertise in NLP applications such as LLM, MT, and ASR.
  • Experience with large scale data processing tools like Spark or equivalent.
  • Ability to manage complex processes across multiple stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication skills and a team player.
  • 2+ years of experience in software engineering.
  • Experience in building large scale machine learning systems is a plus.
  • Distributed cloud computing experience with GCP or AWS is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and optimize solutions for scalable and high-quality model assets.
  • Apply and improve data and model training pipelines for new language support.
  • Manage data acquisition projects and training of neural machine translation models.
  • Drive evaluation criteria to establish high translation quality in Apple's MT products.
