Job description

The CPU Platform Architecture team at Apple is focused on enhancing CPU performance for various products, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, and server designs. As a CPU Performance Engineer specializing in the memory subsystem, you will work on defining and optimizing CPU and cache micro-architecture. Your role involves identifying performance bottlenecks and collaborating with experienced designers to evaluate and refine ideas. The team emphasizes data-driven decisions and seeks to improve productivity across the architecture and performance domains.

Requirements

  • BS degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering or Computer Science
  • 10+ years of relevant industry experience
  • Experience in CPU and SOC architecture and micro-architecture
  • Experience with performance simulation environments
  • Object-oriented programming experience in C/C++
  • Experience in a scripting language such as Perl or Python
  • Knowledge of memory latency tolerance techniques or other aspects of CPU memory subsystem
  • Understanding of common data structures and algorithms
  • Familiarity with SIMD, vector, or accelerator architectures
  • Familiarity with MP performance
  • MS or PhD in Electrical or Computer Engineering or Computer Science is preferred
  • Comfortable in an environment of uncertainty and able to navigate through ambiguities
  • Experience in a research-driven environment

Responsibilities

  • Define and optimize CPU and cache micro-architecture.
  • Identify performance bottlenecks and evaluate ideas for improvement.
  • Engage with CPU and SoC designers to assess the feasibility of ideas through modeling.
  • Refine ideas and model correlation to seed new concepts.
  • Analyze single-threaded and multi-threaded workloads to identify bottlenecks.
  • Collaborate with the CPU architecture and performance team to maintain the simulation environment.
  • Seek ways to boost the productivity of the entire team.

Benefits

  • Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage. Employees also see robust time off, Apple University learning and tuition reimbursement, donation matching and paid volunteer hours, and deep product and partner discounts.
