Job description

The CPU Platform Architecture team at Apple is focused on enhancing CPU performance for various products, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, and server designs. As a CPU Performance Architect, you will work on optimizing CPU and cache micro-architecture, identifying performance bottlenecks, and collaborating with experienced designers. The role emphasizes data-driven decision-making and improving the simulation environment to boost team productivity. You will analyze workloads to find opportunities for enhancement in the memory subsystem.

Requirements

  • BS degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering or Computer Science
  • 20+ years of relevant industry experience
  • Experience in CPU and SOC architecture and micro-architecture
  • Experience with performance simulation environments
  • Object-oriented programming experience in C/C++
  • Experience in a scripting language such as Perl or Python
  • Knowledge of memory latency tolerance techniques or other aspects of CPU memory subsystem
  • Understanding of common data structures and algorithms
  • Familiarity with SIMD, vector, or accelerator architectures
  • Familiarity with MP performance
  • MS or PhD in Electrical or Computer Engineering or Computer Science is preferred
  • Comfortable in an environment of uncertainty and able to navigate through ambiguities
  • Experience in a research-driven environment

Responsibilities

  • Define and optimize CPU and cache micro-architecture.
  • Identify performance bottlenecks and evaluate ideas to address them.
  • Engage with CPU and SoC designers to assess the feasibility of ideas through modeling.
  • Refine ideas and model correlation to seed new concepts.
  • Analyze single-threaded and multi-threaded workloads to identify bottlenecks.
  • Collaborate with the CPU architecture and performance team to maintain and improve the simulation environment.

Benefits

  • Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage. Employees also see robust time off, Apple University learning and tuition reimbursement, donation matching and paid volunteer hours, and deep product and partner discounts.
