Job description

This role is within the Apple Maps Hardware Team, focusing on the integration of complex hardware systems from concept to production. The team operates like an independent start-up, tackling challenges at the intersection of electrical, software, and mechanical engineering. The position requires a hands-on approach to solve cross-functional issues and support the mission of creating world-class mapping and data collection hardware. The ideal candidate will work closely with junior engineers and foster best practices in system design and validation.

Requirements

  • BS in Electrical/Computer Engineering or equivalent
  • 5+ years of industry experience in a hardware development role
  • Strong electrical engineering fundamentals with the ability to analyze and debug complex systems
  • Deep experience in system integration, including grounding, shielding, and power distribution strategies
  • Proven experience overseeing the full PCB development cycle
  • Hands-on experience with lab equipment for debugging hardware issues
  • Experience working with microcontrollers and firmware
  • Ability to drive and mentor junior engineers
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills
  • Experience managing technical issues with vendors
  • Experience using scripting languages for automation
  • Expertise in using low-speed control interfaces
  • Familiarity with high-speed interfaces and their design challenges
  • Exposure to specification and integration of components like PMICs and FPGAs
  • Experience in the selection and specification of connectors and custom cabling
  • Knowledge of cameras and optical systems
  • Knowledge of layout strategies for PCBs

Responsibilities

  • Ensure complex hardware moves successfully from concept to production
  • Solve cross-functional challenges in hardware integration
  • Support the design, manufacturing, production, and field support efforts
  • Drive and mentor junior engineers in best practices
  • Communicate effectively with internal teams and external vendors
  • Manage and resolve technical issues with PCB and component vendors
