Job description

The Apple Services iCloud Mail team is seeking a passionate Java Server Engineer to enhance and scale the distributed systems that support iCloud Mail globally. This role focuses on addressing technical challenges while ensuring user data remains secure, private, and accessible. The ideal candidate will have a strong emphasis on building high-performance and extensible systems. Collaboration and ownership of quality from design to deployment are key aspects of this position.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of professional experience in server-side Java development.
  • Deep understanding of security principles for modern microservices, including mTLS, authentication, authorization, and security auditing.
  • Expertise in building scalable services using asynchronous programming, non-blocking I/O, and multi-threading.
  • Hands-on experience with NoSQL databases, such as Cassandra and Redis.
  • Familiarity with containerization technologies like Docker and Kubernetes.

Responsibilities

  • Improve the backend services that form the backbone of iCloud Mail.
  • Build high-performance, scalable, and extensible systems for users.
  • Lead the full lifecycle of multiple services from architecture and design to development, testing, and maintenance.
  • Collaborate effectively with multi-functional teams.

Benefits

  • Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage. Employees also see robust time off, Apple University learning and tuition reimbursement, donation matching and paid volunteer hours, and deep product and partner discounts.
