Job description

The Color Science Engineer role is part of the Camera Systems Engineering group at Apple, focusing on the development of next-generation camera color technology. This position involves creating spectral simulation and modeling tools to analyze how variations in components affect overall color performance. The engineer will work collaboratively with various teams to translate technical findings into actionable recommendations. The role is critical in informing architectural decisions and optimizing color performance across Apple products.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Color/Imaging Science, Physics, Optical Engineering, EE, or a relevant field
  • Experience in color or vision science, including color/spectral measurement and color appearance
  • Experience programming in Python and/or Matlab
  • MS/PhD in Color/Imaging Science or a related field and 3+ years of relevant industry experience
  • Experience with spectral simulation or modeling of physical/optical systems and their impact on color response
  • Experience in statistical modeling, error analysis, or Monte Carlo methods
  • Experience with two or more of the following: spectrometers, monochromators, goniometers
  • Experience connecting lab characterization of camera systems to manufacturing specs as they relate to color performance
  • Experience with AI/ML tools applied to engineering workflows
  • Experience distilling complex technical analysis into clear recommendations for cross-functional and leadership audiences

Responsibilities

  • Develop spectral simulation and modeling tools to quantify component-level variation impacts on system-level color performance.
  • Define specifications based on Monte Carlo error budgets.
  • Evaluate emerging sensor architectures and optical technologies.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with sensor, optics, ISP, and architecture teams.
  • Translate technical findings into actionable recommendations.

Benefits

  • Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage. Employees also see robust time off, Apple University learning and tuition reimbursement, donation matching and paid volunteer hours, and deep product and partner discounts.
