Job description

The Optical Engineer will be part of the Camera Hardware Engineering group at Apple, focusing on the development of custom illumination and sensing components. This team is dedicated to delivering superior camera hardware that enhances user experience. The role requires collaboration with cross-functional teams to integrate illumination components into systems and assess new optical concepts. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in optical engineering and experience with optical simulations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Optical Science, Optical Engineering, Physics, or a relevant field of study with 2 years of relevant work experience.
  • Graduate degree with 5 years of industry experience.
  • Experience in modeling and analyzing illumination systems using optical simulation software such as LightTools, FRED, Zemax, or CODEV.
  • Experience with simulations involving coherent light propagation and polarization.
  • Experience with optical metrology techniques, particularly radiometric measurements and coherent source measurements, such as laser diodes.
  • Familiarity with CAD software such as NX or SolidWorks.
  • Experience with the development of scripts to automate optical simulations and data analysis using Python, Matlab, VB, or C++.

Responsibilities

  • Generate documentation describing optical components, optical performance characteristics, and optical testing methodologies.
  • Interface with cross-functional teams to support the integration of illumination components into systems.
  • Manage multiple projects and priorities while taking initiative and exploring new ideas.

Benefits

  • Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage. Employees also see robust time off, Apple University learning and tuition reimbursement, donation matching and paid volunteer hours, and deep product and partner discounts.
