Job description

Apple's Wallet, Payments, and Commerce (WPC) teams are looking for a Distinguished Engineer to lead the technical vision for their financial services platform. This role involves shaping the architecture for offerings like Apple Pay and Apple Cash, ensuring they meet high standards for user experience and compliance. The engineer will collaborate with various teams and mentor technical talent while addressing complex problems in payments architecture. This is a unique opportunity to influence the future of financial systems at Apple.

Requirements

  • Deep expertise in payments or financial systems, including money movement, tokenization, or transaction processing.
  • Proven experience designing and evolving large-scale distributed systems serving millions of users or high-volume transactions.
  • Strong foundation in cloud-native architectures and systems designed for scalability and resilience.
  • Track record of technical leadership, driving alignment and architectural direction across large, complex organizations.
  • Demonstrated success influencing cross-functional decisions and guiding senior leaders on technology investments.
  • Experience working with or building regulated systems and understanding compliance implications.
  • Exceptional ability to communicate complex technical concepts to executive and engineering audiences alike.
  • Demonstrated success mentoring and elevating technical talent across global teams.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience collaborating with external partners, financial institutions, or payment networks.
  • Familiarity with emerging payment standards and technologies shaping the industry's future.
  • Experience building or evolving shared platforms that serve multiple products or business units.

Responsibilities

  • Shape the long-term technical direction for offerings including Apple Pay, Apple Cash, and Tap to Pay.
  • Serve as a focal point for technical dialogue and strategy across WPC and broader Apple engineering.
  • Partner with engineering, product, business, and regulatory leaders to ensure technology meets user experience and compliance standards.
  • Mentor and elevate technical talent across teams, fostering deep domain knowledge in payments architecture.
  • Bring clarity to complex problems and drive architectural decisions balancing innovation, scalability, reliability, and compliance.

Benefits

  • Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage. Employees also see robust time off, Apple University learning and tuition reimbursement, donation matching and paid volunteer hours, and deep product and partner discounts.
