Job description

The CPU Physical Design Engineer role at Apple involves driving and participating in block-level physical design for CPU products. The position requires collaboration with various teams to ensure design convergence and meet ambitious performance, power, and area goals. Engineers will work closely with CAD and methodology teams to optimize design tools and processes. This role is essential in improving silicon yield and ensuring the reliability and testability of CPU designs.

Requirements

  • Minimum BS degree and 3+ years of relevant industry experience
  • Experience in digital circuits, timing and power concepts, and logic design
  • Proficiency in Perl or TCL programming languages
  • Familiarity with industry-standard logic synthesis, place-and-route, static timing analysis, and power analysis tools
  • Ability to work well in a team, be self-motivated, and possess excellent communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Drive RTL-to-GDS design convergence through logic synthesis and place-and-route tools targeting ambitious PPA goals
  • Be responsible for block-level physical design delivery along with closure of backend flows and electrical requirements
  • Work closely with internal CAD and PD methodology teams on industry-standard synthesis and PNR tool features and optimizations
  • Collaborate with cross-functional top-level teams on CPU floorplan, timing, power, reliability, and testability aspects
  • Work closely with custom IP teams to define and co-optimize memory macros and library standard cells to improve design PPA

Benefits

  • Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage. Employees also see robust time off, Apple University learning and tuition reimbursement, donation matching and paid volunteer hours, and deep product and partner discounts.
