Job description

The Research Scientist role at Apple focuses on developing rigorous evaluation methodologies for AI systems, particularly in the context of large language models and human-AI interaction. The team is interdisciplinary, combining expertise from measurement science, machine learning, and engineering to address evaluation as a core research problem. Candidates will engage in original research, design experiments, and publish findings while collaborating with platform engineers to implement their methods. The position is suitable for individuals at various career levels who are passionate about advancing evaluation science.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a closely related field with a focus on evaluation-adjacent areas.
  • Strong publication record at top-tier conferences, including first-author publications demonstrating independent research contributions.
  • Deep technical expertise in at least one evaluation-adjacent ML area, with strong mathematical foundations.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement complex methods from recent papers and run large-scale experiments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write clear research papers.
  • Strong hands-on experience with modern ML frameworks such as PyTorch, JAX, or TensorFlow.

Responsibilities

  • Formulate open problems in evaluation science and design experiments to address them.
  • Publish findings in reputable conferences and journals.
  • Drive projects from conception through completion while ensuring methods are productionized.
  • Collaborate closely with platform engineers to translate research into production-ready SDKs and APIs.
  • Engage with the evaluation research community through presentations, workshops, and open-source contributions.

Benefits

  • Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage. Employees also see robust time off, Apple University learning and tuition reimbursement, donation matching and paid volunteer hours, and deep product and partner discounts.
