Job description

The Camera Incubation team at Apple is seeking a creative ML Research Engineer to work on innovative projects that explore new experiences and technologies in intelligent cameras. This role involves collaborating with design and product teams to prototype and integrate machine learning solutions across various platforms. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in ML/AI architectures and a design-centric approach to problem-solving. The position requires navigating ambiguity and adapting quickly to new data and insights.

Requirements

  • BS and a minimum of 3 years relevant industry experience in machine learning or AI engineering
  • Familiarity with state-of-the-art architectures including transformers, reinforcement learning, and predictive inference
  • Strong coding skills across modern ML frameworks such as PyTorch
  • Proven experience building end-to-end ML pipelines from data acquisition to deployment
  • Experience architecting and integrating sensing systems that fuse multimodal signals
  • MS or PhD with substantial applied research experience in a relevant area
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical tradeoffs and risks to collaborators
  • Demonstrated comfort with ambiguity and a track record of adapting quickly
  • Experience working in a research, incubation, or early-stage exploratory environment
  • Familiarity with on-device or edge ML deployment and its associated constraints
  • Background in robotics, embedded systems, or real-time sensing pipelines
  • Knowledge of practical Bayesian reasoning and methods
  • Experience with physics-based machine learning techniques
  • Cross-disciplinary collaboration experience in hardware, software, design, and research

Responsibilities

  • Work across the full stack from model training to rapid prototyping
  • Collaborate with design and product teams to bring new features to Apple products
  • Explore concept prototypes to shape the capabilities of intelligent cameras
  • Integrate machine learning models with multimodal sensing systems
  • Adapt quickly to new data and insights to guide project direction
  • Communicate technical motivations and tradeoffs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

Benefits

  • Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage. Employees also see robust time off, Apple University learning and tuition reimbursement, donation matching and paid volunteer hours, and deep product and partner discounts.
