Job description

The Applied ML Engineer will join a team dedicated to defending Apple's ecosystem by building large-scale machine learning systems that protect users from emerging threats. This role involves designing, building, and deploying critical machine learning models focused on safety and security challenges. The engineer will collaborate with researchers and product teams to create robust defenses while ensuring user privacy. The position requires ownership of the full lifecycle of abuse detection models and contributions to Apple's AI platform architecture.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of experience shipping machine learning models to production.
  • Strong familiarity with research fundamentals, machine learning principles, and development methodologies around LLMs, foundation models, and diffusion models.
  • Proficient programming skills in Python and deep learning toolkits such as JAX, PyTorch, or TensorFlow.
  • Hands-on experience with fine-tuning or aligning large language models for security or safety applications.
  • Experience building large-scale data processing pipelines and ML infrastructure.
  • BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or related fields or an equivalent qualification.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and deploy production-grade ML models to detect and mitigate abuse across multiple modalities.
  • Own the full ML lifecycle from prototyping and data analysis to deployment, monitoring, and continuous improvement of models in production.
  • Drive the data strategy to improve model performance by analyzing distribution gaps and creating automated annotation systems.
  • Architect end-to-end systems for monitoring platform activity and triggering automated enforcement actions in real-time.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners in engineering, research, and product to define project requirements and deliver robust security solutions.

Benefits

  • Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage. Employees also see robust time off, Apple University learning and tuition reimbursement, donation matching and paid volunteer hours, and deep product and partner discounts.
