Job description

The role is for a Senior Backend Software Engineer in the AI/ML FM Data organization, focusing on enhancing Foundation Models for Apple Intelligence features. The team aims to improve model training efficiency by leveraging diverse data sources and building scalable pipelines. You will work on backend innovations that impact millions of customers across various Apple devices. The position requires a strong background in programming and data processing to support the development of training data pipelines and large-scale inferences.

Requirements

  • BS in Computer Science or equivalent.
  • 10+ years of programming experience in Python.
  • Extensive experience in concurrency and parallelism, functional programming, and decorators.
  • Familiarity with other programming languages such as Java, GoLang, Rust, or Swift.
  • Proficient in REST API, Redis, VectorDB, or other large-scale data storage systems.
  • Solid foundational programming skills in algorithms, data structures, and OOP.
  • Experience designing, writing, reviewing, testing, and delivering software for applications and systems at scale.
  • Familiarity with streaming-processing tools like Kafka.
  • Familiarity with various build tools such as Jenkins, Maven, Docker, or Gradle.
  • Experience providing architecture and design guidance.

Responsibilities

  • Develop training data pipelines to convert raw data into formats suitable for training jobs on GCP and AWS.
  • Leverage internal and open-sourced training modules for model training.
  • Generate inferences using fine-tuned LLMs on large datasets for pre-training and post-training.
  • Efficiently process and filter large amounts of messy data.
  • Build scalable web services backend and APIs to support data access and inspection tools.

Benefits

  • Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage. Employees also see robust time off, Apple University learning and tuition reimbursement, donation matching and paid volunteer hours, and deep product and partner discounts.
