The SPEAR team at Apple is seeking a collaborative OS platform software engineer focused on enhancing the security of end user devices. This team works on high-impact projects that improve the security of critical operating system components. The role involves delivering robust infrastructure and mitigations to eliminate software vulnerabilities. The engineer will contribute to cross-functional collaboration and thorough documentation to ensure the security of Apple's products.

  • Experience implementing software following object-oriented design principles
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively about technical topics
  • Enthusiastic, empathetic, and collaborative approach to multi-functional projects
  • Understanding of the foundations of a system programming language such as C, C++, Swift, or Rust

Responsibilities

  • Efficiently gain familiarity with the design and implementation of existing codebases.
  • Contribute to the design of security hardening projects such as memory safety technology adoption and mitigation deployment.
  • Update existing software codebases or create new codebases to achieve security goals.
  • Implement projects using appropriate programming languages, potentially including Swift, Objective-C, or C++.
  • Adopt or update unit tests and collaborate with QA engineers on functional testing.
  • Document changes and new architectural elements, creating necessary training materials for partner teams.
  • Communicate collaboratively and effectively during all project phases.

Benefits

  • Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage. Employees also see robust time off, Apple University learning and tuition reimbursement, donation matching and paid volunteer hours, and deep product and partner discounts.
