Job description
The Applied LLM Research Engineer will innovate and develop technology that integrates powerful foundation models into everyday user workflows at Apple. This role is part of the Input Experience NLP team, focusing on enhancing user experience through advanced language understanding and personalized text composition. The engineer will bridge the gap between cutting-edge machine learning research and practical applications, ensuring alignment with product goals and privacy requirements. The position involves collaboration with cross-functional partners to craft experiences that feel magical to users.
Requirements
- PhD in CS, EE, Physics, Statistics, or related field; or Bachelor's or Master's in the same fields combined with 2 years of relevant experience.
- Strong foundations in machine learning and large language models, including core principles and practical applications.
- Familiarity with post-training techniques such as SFT, RLHF, data synthesis, and parameter-efficient fine-tuning.
- Experience with training frameworks such as PyTorch, JAX, TensorFlow, or equivalent.
- Experience fine-tuning and deploying large machine learning models for real-world products.
- Experience curating, filtering, and synthesizing high-quality training datasets at scale.
- Experience developing and training models for agentic workflows and advanced reasoning techniques.
- Familiarity with designing hardware-efficient model architectures and optimizing inference latency.
- Active contributor to complex, large-scale codebases with an emphasis on writing high-quality, maintainable code.
- Excellent programming and communication skills.
Responsibilities
- Build, run, and refine training and evaluation pipelines for Apple Intelligence.
- Explore, design, and implement emerging techniques in AI applications.
- Contribute to all phases of model development, including problem formulation and continuous improvement.
- Ensure alignment of model performance with product goals and privacy requirements.
- Define and refine new features to expand Apple Intelligence's capabilities.
