Job description
The Darwin Systems team at Apple is responsible for delivering a high-quality kernel for various Apple products, including watchOS, iOS, macOS, tvOS, visionOS, and Apple Cloud. This position focuses on operating systems fundamentals, particularly in kernel design and implementation, with an emphasis on virtual memory management. Engineers will work across all layers of the stack, collaborating with product teams to enhance performance and stability. The role offers an opportunity to influence design from hardware to applications while ensuring a modern and efficient operating system.
Requirements
- BS/MS in Computer Science or equivalent knowledge and experience.
- Ability to work with teams across multiple timezones.
- Familiarity with Unix and associated tools.
- Ability to ramp up quickly on an unfamiliar code base.
- In-depth knowledge of kernel internals.
- Demonstrated record of working on core operating system technologies, specifically around memory management in a modern kernel.
- Familiarity with modern processor architecture, including memory hierarchy, multi-core, and multithreading.
Responsibilities
- Manage page management and mechanisms such as copy on write and low-memory process killing.
- Collaborate with other engineers to solve problems and improve the software stack.
- Design and implement major projects related to operating system technologies.
- Ensure the delivery of high-quality and performant kernel features.
- Work closely with product teams to provide a modern and efficient operating system.
