Job description

The Applied AI Scientist will join the Multimodal Intelligence Team at Apple, focusing on Generative AI and multimodal foundation models. This role involves bridging the gap between research advances and practical applications, working alongside accomplished scientists and engineers. The team is dedicated to developing pioneering solutions that leverage Apple's sensing hardware and large foundation models. This position offers a unique opportunity to influence the future of Apple products and enhance user experiences.

Requirements

  • MS in Computer Science, Computer Vision, Machine Learning, or a related technical field, and a minimum of 6 years relevant experience.
  • PhD, or equivalent practical experience, in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related technical field.
  • Experience in deep learning with demonstrated work in at least one area of multimodal systems such as vision, language, or video.
  • Proficiency in Python and in a modern deep learning framework such as PyTorch or JAX.
  • Demonstrated expertise in deep learning with a publication record in relevant conferences or a strong track record of applying deep learning techniques to real-world products.
  • Experience with foundation models, including language or multimodal.
  • Familiarity with large-scale data pipelines, including data curation, preprocessing, and efficient storage.
  • Experience fine-tuning or optimizing large models for production deployment.
  • Experience applying foundation models to build autonomous or semi-autonomous agents, including planning, task decomposition, and multi-step reasoning.
  • Familiarity with privacy-preserving or on-device machine learning.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and adapt emerging research in generative AI and multimodal foundation models.
  • Conduct applied research experiments to test and validate new ideas.
  • Work with engineering teams to transform promising research approaches into robust solutions.
  • Engage and collaborate with several teams across Apple to deliver the best products.
  • Craft upcoming research directions in the field of multimodal foundation models.

Benefits

  • Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage. Employees also see robust time off, Apple University learning and tuition reimbursement, donation matching and paid volunteer hours, and deep product and partner discounts.
