Job description

The Sr. Optical Network Engineer will be part of the Network Product Development team at AWS, focusing on building, deploying, and scaling Amazon networks across global datacenters. This role involves collaborating with a diverse team of engineers and specialists to ensure the stability and sustainability of next-generation networks. The engineer will work on automating optical test plans, evaluating new hardware and software features, and addressing operational issues. The position emphasizes delivering impactful solutions while maintaining high standards for safety and security.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or above in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or equivalent.
  • 7+ years of relevant hands-on systems engineering and administrative work in networking, storage systems, and operating systems.
  • 5+ years of experience with optical transceivers and IEEE standards.
  • 2+ years of experience developing test scripts for optics validation and characterization.
  • Expertise in hardware and systems design and development.
  • Experience with ethernet and PCIe protocols and AI/ML scale-up approaches.
  • Experience with design and manufacturing of pluggable optics or AECs (i.e SFP, SFP+, QSFP, QSFP-DD, OSFP).
  • Expertise in system integration, debugging, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience working with ODM and CM suppliers of Optical Modules.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with vendors/manufacturers to evaluate new hardware and software features and develop implementation plans.
  • Automate optical test plans and qualify optical modules.
  • Identify ambiguous problem areas in existing or new network architecture and propose impactful projects.
  • Drive discussions with customers and peers to influence team strategy.
  • Work with the network operations team to identify operational issues and improve quality and RMA processes.
  • Monitor module quality in the fleet and create mechanisms to remediate large-scale events.
