Job description

Amazon's Material Handling Engineering team is looking for a Hardware Development Engineer to design and deliver advanced material handling equipment for their global distribution network. This role involves developing mechanical, electrical, and control solutions while collaborating with third-party OEM partners. The engineer will need to balance technical expertise with problem-solving skills to create scalable engineering solutions. The team focuses on consistency and scalability across Amazon's network, aiming to refine designs and drive innovation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or an equivalent engineering science.
  • 5+ years of hardware engineering experience.
  • Experience in hardware design and validation of components, subsystems, and systems.
  • Experience managing external vendors, distributors, partners, or learning providers.
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication abilities.
  • Experience completing complex tasks quickly with little to no guidance.
  • Knowledge of SolidWorks simulation or Ansys Finite Element analysis tools.
  • Experience in the design of complex mechanical products and equipment at volume.
  • Strong technical background in automated or non-automated material handling equipment.
  • Familiarity with robotics, conveyance, or sortation systems.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and validate hardware solutions for Amazon's next-generation material handling systems.
  • Translate ambiguous business problems into clear technical requirements and engineering solutions.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners to ensure successful product delivery.
  • Lead the design-for-manufacturing, assembly, installation, and maintenance processes.
  • Evaluate and integrate OEM hardware solutions and lead in-house design where required.
  • Build prototypes, conduct testing, and analyze results to validate performance, safety, and reliability.
  • Author technical specifications, design documents, and test plans.
  • Champion data-driven decision making and document technical trade-offs.
  • Manage risk through proactive identification and mitigation strategies.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies in automation, robotics, and industrial equipment.

Benefits

  • Employees at Amazon are often offered comprehensive health benefits—including multiple medical plan options (no pre-existing condition exclusions, 100% covered in-network preventive care), dental and vision plans, a 24/7 medical advice line from day one, expert second-opinion services, and broad mental-health support with several free counseling sessions (including pediatric). Financial wellness typically includes a 401(k) with company match (up to 2%), Restricted Stock Units (equity), FSAs, an emergency savings program, product and partner discounts, and even college-savings and home-purchase programs. Overall, the package is designed to support employees and their families’ health, finances, and day-to-day life.
