Job description

The Senior Opto-Mechanical Engineer will be a key member of the Amazon Leo for Government Engineering team, focusing on the design and analysis of optical systems for satellite and ground applications. This role requires a strong background in opto-mechanical design and the ability to conduct complex analyses to meet customer needs. The engineer will work collaboratively with various disciplines to optimize optical payloads and ensure solutions are space qualified. The position emphasizes hands-on involvement and effective communication with customers and team members.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in science, technology, engineering, math, business or equivalent
  • 8+ years experience as an opto-mechanical engineer and designer
  • 1+ years experience with STOP analysis methods and tools
  • Master's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent
  • 10+ years experience in opto-mechanical design and analysis
  • 5+ years experience with STOP analysis
  • 5+ years as a mechanical lead or responsible engineer for opto-mechanical systems

Responsibilities

  • Perform opto-mechanical design and layout trade studies for satellite optical communication payloads and ground-based optical communication equipment.
  • Conduct or oversee structural, thermal, and optical (STOP) analysis to support design work.
  • Facilitate cost trades on multiple configurations for cost/manufacturability versus design uncertainty.
  • Generate detailed designs via CAD systems and engineering drawings with appropriate geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
  • Deliver well-written documentation, reports, and presentations for technical design reviews.
  • Design and support test campaigns for space hardware.
  • Interact directly with customers to understand technical requirements and translate them into robust solutions.

Benefits

  • Employees at Amazon are often offered comprehensive health benefits—including multiple medical plan options (no pre-existing condition exclusions, 100% covered in-network preventive care), dental and vision plans, a 24/7 medical advice line from day one, expert second-opinion services, and broad mental-health support with several free counseling sessions (including pediatric). Financial wellness typically includes a 401(k) with company match (up to 2%), Restricted Stock Units (equity), FSAs, an emergency savings program, product and partner discounts, and even college-savings and home-purchase programs. Overall, the package is designed to support employees and their families’ health, finances, and day-to-day life.
