·FY 2025Job description
The Mechanical Engineer role focuses on building complex robotic systems, requiring expertise in structural and electromechanical design. The position is part of the Frontier AI & Robotics team at Amazon, which is dedicated to developing advanced AI models for robotics. Candidates will engage in hands-on hardware development and collaborate with electrical, software, and AI research teams. This role also offers opportunities to contribute to innovative research projects in high degree-of-freedom robotics.
Requirements
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related discipline.
- 6 to 10 years of experience in designing mechanical systems for robotics or complex electromechanical products.
- Strong proficiency in 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks or OnShape.
- Significant hands-on experience building prototypes and troubleshooting mechanical issues.
- Deep understanding of actuator and motor selection for complex robotic applications.
- Experience with wire/cable harness design and routing in compact mechanical systems.
- Familiarity with integrating sensing and compute elements into mechanical designs.
- Solid knowledge of Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles.
Responsibilities
- Lead mechanical design of robotic subsystems and full platforms.
- Own kinematic, dynamic, and structural analyses for high-degree-of-freedom robots.
- Specify and integrate actuators and motors for high-torque density applications.
- Contribute to thermal management strategies for motors and sensors.
- Integrate sensors into compact, functional assemblies.
- Design and route cabling and wire harnesses for reliability and serviceability.
- Prototype and test mechanical systems, supporting hands-on builds and field testing.
- Conduct root cause analysis on system-level failures and implement design improvements.
- Apply DFM and DFA principles to transition prototypes into scalable builds.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to meet research and product goals.
Benefits
- Employees at Amazon are often offered comprehensive health benefits—including multiple medical plan options (no pre-existing condition exclusions, 100% covered in-network preventive care), dental and vision plans, a 24/7 medical advice line from day one, expert second-opinion services, and broad mental-health support with several free counseling sessions (including pediatric). Financial wellness typically includes a 401(k) with company match (up to 2%), Restricted Stock Units (equity), FSAs, an emergency savings program, product and partner discounts, and even college-savings and home-purchase programs. Overall, the package is designed to support employees and their families’ health, finances, and day-to-day life.
