Job description

Tesla is looking for a Diagnostics Engineer for Autonomous Driving Systems, focusing on self-driving software and hardware. The role involves diagnosing complex electrical systems, improving customer and service technician experiences, and advocating for end users in global service operations.

Requirements

  • Strong engineering fundamentals with the ability to diagnose both hardware and embedded software
  • Experience with common communication protocols (CAN, LIN, SPI, Ethernet)
  • Software development skills in C++, Python, and/or JavaScript; able to review, debug, and contribute to production codebases
  • Experience working with driver assistance and autonomous driving systems; experience with camera-based perception systems a plus
  • Data analysis skills (SQL, data visualization, basic statistics)
  • Clear written and verbal communication; able to distill complex technical findings into actionable recommendations
  • A collaborative but independent working style, comfortable digging into problems autonomously
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating successful projects across hardware/software engineering, field service, and customer support teams
  • Prior experience in Formula SAE or experience working on personal cars is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Review and triage field cases: analyze vehicle logs and diagnostic data to root-cause issues across hardware and software
  • Own the diagnostic strategy for autonomous driving features: define what needs to be detected, design the diagnostic approach, and implement it in production code
  • Optimize repair procedures and guide future product designs to improve serviceability
  • Analyze fleet metrics to identify trends, edge cases, and areas for improvement
  • Support vehicle-level testing and validation of fixes and new features
  • Present insights and recommendations to leadership and cross-functional teams
  • Establish and support a strong feedback loop from Customer Support and Service teams to the development teams focused on autonomous driving

Benefits

  • Employees at Tesla are often offered day-one coverage with multiple medical options (some at $0 paycheck cost), dental/vision, company HSA contributions, a 401(k) match, and equity programs. Most roles also include paid time off and holidays, family-building support, employee assistance, commuter and childcare benefits, and access to discounts and wellness programs.
