Job description

Tesla is seeking a Controls Engineer to design, develop, and optimize advanced control systems for battery cell manufacturing equipment. The role involves programming and integrating PLCs, robots, and safety systems while collaborating with cross-functional teams to enhance manufacturing automation.

Requirements

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • Strong proficiency in process integration and electromechanical/mechatronic systems
  • Advanced experience programming industrial controls including Ladder Logic PLCs and Safety PLCs
  • HMI/GUI development experience
  • Familiarity with fieldbus networks and serial communications
  • Hands-on exposure to production machinery and sensors
  • Prior experience with manufacturing equipment, especially in battery/EV-related production is highly desired
  • Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to documentation

Responsibilities

  • Debug and optimize automated processes to maximize cycle time, equipment availability, and yield
  • Develop robust system architecture and detailed electrical/pneumatic schematics
  • Architect, write, and debug clean, structured PLC ladder logic
  • Design and implement control-reliable safety systems
  • Create intuitive HMI screens for troubleshooting and operator feedback
  • Participate in equipment conceptual development
  • Lay out NFPA 79 / NEC / UL508A-compliant industrial control panels
  • Manage suppliers through specification and design reviews
  • Build and commission electrical cabinets and field wiring
  • Establish data management networks for product, process, and quality traceability
