Job description

The Senior Staff Engineer (L6) role at Uber focuses on leading the technical strategy for the Core Infrastructure Platform. This position requires a visionary who can tackle extreme scale challenges and drive the evolution of platform engineering. The engineer will be responsible for optimizing fleet utilization, scaling AI and ML infrastructure, and modernizing the data plane. Additionally, the role involves mentoring other engineers and influencing cross-organizational initiatives.

Requirements

  • 12+ years of software engineering experience with a focus on massive-scale distributed systems or infrastructure.
  • Proven experience managing infrastructure that supports millions of concurrent users or petabyte-scale data processing.
  • Mastery of Kubernetes internals, container runtimes, and the Linux kernel.
  • Deep experience with cloud-native networking and multi-cloud architecture.
  • Expert-level proficiency in Go, Java, or C++.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead large technical initiatives and influence senior leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Own the technical vision to drive fleet-wide CPU utilization and unit-cost optimization.
  • Define the architecture for shared GPU pools and high-performance clusters.
  • Drive the convergence of Uber’s networking stack toward industry standards.
  • Lead the initiative to ensure every service follows standardized safe-deployment.
  • Integrate AI-driven solutions into the infrastructure to automate alerts.
  • Partner with various teams to ensure infrastructure serves as a competitive advantage.
  • Mentor and coach the next generation of technical leaders.
