Job description

As a Principal Engineer in Evaluation & Simulation at Uber, you will lead the architectural vision and technical strategy for large-scale virtual testing and validation platforms for autonomous vehicles. You will design high-fidelity simulation frameworks that integrate sensor data and behavioral models to evaluate autonomous capabilities. This role involves mentoring engineers and collaborating with cross-functional teams to enhance AI research and safety benchmarking. The team is focused on unlocking real-world driving data to advance the autonomous technology ecosystem.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of working experience in Software Engineering, Autonomous Systems, Simulation, or Robotics
  • Proven experience leading the architecture and delivery of large-scale distributed systems or complex simulation platforms from conception to production
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related fields
  • Expert-level proficiency in C++ and Python within Linux environments
  • Deep expertise in high-performance computing, system optimization, and cloud architecture (AWS, GCP, etc.)

Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical roadmap for the large-scale, cloud-based simulation platform.
  • Design and oversee the implementation of advanced simulation frameworks that integrate sensor data.
  • Define the deterministic and probabilistic evaluation metrics used to score autonomous behavior.
  • Act as the crucial bridge between simulation infrastructure and the core ML stack.
  • Mentor senior and lead engineers, fostering a culture of rigorous software architecture and engineering excellence.

Benefits

  • Employees at Uber are often offered comprehensive health, life, disability, and mental wellness benefits, along with wellbeing stipends, travel medical coverage, and monthly Uber credits for Rides and Eats. Employees also get generous paid parental leave, flexible time off, and family-planning support so they can care for themselves and their families at every stage.
