Job description

The Staff Engineer (5B) role in Core Infrastructure at Uber is a key technical leadership position focused on the architecture and evolution of systems that support Uber's global business. The Core Infrastructure Platform team is responsible for building the next generation of orchestration, foundation, and networking layers, managing a complex fleet across on-prem data centers and public clouds. The role emphasizes creating a secure, reliable, and efficient cloud-native ecosystem while mentoring engineers and collaborating with various teams to enhance infrastructure capabilities. The position requires a strong background in systems languages and distributed systems.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of full-time Software Engineering work experience, including PhD research or equivalent specialized education.
  • Deep proficiency in Go, Java, or C++.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and productionizing large-scale, high-availability infrastructure services.
  • A track record of leading complex, multi-quarter technical initiatives from design to fleet-wide rollout.

Responsibilities

  • Identify architectural gaps in compute and networking stacks and lead projects to fill those gaps.
  • Design and implement solutions to increase fleet-wide CPU utilization and accelerate ARM adoption.
  • Lead the technical strategy for ensuring resilient, active-active foundations across cloud providers.
  • Drive the development of infrastructure tools to automate alert triaging and incident response.
  • Ensure service-to-service authorization and zero-trust networking are integrated into core platforms.
  • Collaborate with Storage, Data, and Product teams to support larger ranking models and AV data ingestion.
  • Mentor mid-level engineers and foster a culture of operational excellence.
