Job description

The Director of Engineering - Autonomy will lead the strategic vision for teams developing core components of the autonomy system and its safety architectures. This role focuses on advancing Physical AI through edge-deployed machine learning and ensuring real-time execution with deterministic safety fallbacks. The team is dedicated to transforming real-world operations into high-quality data for autonomous partners, tackling the challenges of collecting long-tail driving data. The position requires collaboration with various departments to ensure safe and effective deployment of autonomous systems.

Requirements

  • 12+ years of professional experience in Software Engineering, Machine Learning, or Autonomous Systems
  • 5+ years of leadership experience managing and scaling engineering organizations
  • Proven track record of successfully deploying complex, real-time software systems to physical hardware
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field

Responsibilities

  • Define the technical vision and organizational roadmap for major components of the core autonomy system
  • Direct the development of robust edge software and guide the integration of advanced ML models with safety fallbacks
  • Champion the transition of cutting-edge AI into production-ready software for vehicle operations
  • Build, manage, and mentor a high-performing organization of engineering managers and technical leaders
  • Partner with other AV departments to ensure a seamless transition from virtual testing to physical fleet deployment
