Job description

As a Graduate PhD Software Engineer II at Uber, you will leverage your expertise in AI, machine learning, and robotics to develop production-grade systems for autonomous driving applications. You will join the AV Labs team, focusing on transforming real-world operations into high-quality data and intelligent systems. The role involves tackling complex challenges in autonomy, particularly in real-world driving scenarios. You will contribute to building safer and more robust autonomous systems that operate in dynamic environments.

Requirements

  • Completing or recently completed a PhD in Computer Science, Robotics, Machine Learning, Computer Vision, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Strong publication record in top-tier AI, ML, robotics, or computer vision conferences.
  • Deep knowledge of machine learning for robotics, computer vision, or autonomous systems.
  • Experience working with large-scale sensor data and building data pipelines for ML applications.
  • Strong proficiency in Python and experience with modern ML frameworks such as PyTorch.
  • Familiarity with C++ and high-performance or real-time systems.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and deploy production-grade machine learning systems for autonomous driving applications.
  • Develop and apply advanced techniques in computer vision, deep learning, robotics, and sequential decision-making.
  • Translate state-of-the-art research into scalable, high-impact solutions for autonomy systems.
  • Build and optimize large-scale data pipelines for sensor data ingestion, processing, and auto-labeling.
  • Architect and improve infrastructure for high-throughput training and low-latency inference.
  • Own your work end-to-end from problem formulation to production deployment.
  • Identify and solve edge cases and long-tail scenarios to improve system robustness and safety.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with engineers across platform, infrastructure, and product teams.

Benefits

  • Employees at Uber are often offered comprehensive health, life, disability, and mental wellness benefits, along with wellbeing stipends, travel medical coverage, and monthly Uber credits for Rides and Eats. Employees also get generous paid parental leave, flexible time off, and family-planning support so they can care for themselves and their families at every stage.
