Job description

The Engineering Manager for the Grocery & Retail Consumer Ranking team at Uber will lead the development of the online ranking architecture and high-throughput serving stack. This role focuses on creating seamless shopping experiences for users by optimizing backend infrastructure and integrating advanced machine learning models. The manager will oversee a team of engineers, driving initiatives to improve system performance and reliability while ensuring operational excellence. Collaboration with Data Science and ML Engineering is essential to integrate state-of-the-art models into a production environment.

Requirements

  • 10+ years in software engineering with a focus on high-traffic backend systems.
  • 4+ years of engineering management experience.
  • Deep experience in distributed systems, API/service design, and high-scale production serving.
  • Proven track record in managing SLOs/SLAs, incident response, and performance/latency optimization.
  • Experience delivering ML-backed services and partnering with Data Science and ML Engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the team of backend and ML engineers owning the online ranking serving stack.
  • Define, prioritize, and execute an ambitious product roadmap through strong people leadership.
  • Lead high-impact initiatives to improve p99 latency and infra-cost efficiency.
  • Oversee the development of real-time and batch pipelines for online/offline consistency.
  • Lay out the multi-quarter roadmap for ranking infrastructure and drive architectural migrations.
  • Champion a strong engineering culture of on-call health and post-mortems.
  • Build and extend automated experimentation capabilities with guardrails and logging.
