Job description

Arcadis is seeking a highly skilled Resident Engineer to support a major Transit Authority in delivering complex capital construction projects. This client-facing role involves serving as the on-site technical lead, providing expert oversight of construction activities. The ideal candidate will thrive in collaborative environments and excel at problem-solving in the field. The position focuses on ensuring work is executed safely, efficiently, and in alignment with project goals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field (PE license preferred).
  • 10+ years of engineering or construction management experience, with at least 5 years in transit, rail, or heavy civil infrastructure.
  • Strong technical knowledge of transit systems, including stations, trackwork, structures, utilities, signals, communications, or related disciplines.
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing contractors and managing field engineering activities in active transit environments.
  • Familiarity with Transit Authority standards, public-sector procurement, and regulatory frameworks.

Responsibilities

  • Represent the consulting firm and the Transit Authority as the on-site engineering lead for assigned construction projects.
  • Provide daily oversight of contractor activities, including monitoring progress, verifying quality, and ensuring compliance with safety and environmental protocols.
  • Lead field engineering tasks such as reviewing submittals, RFIs, shop drawings, and technical clarifications.
  • Collaborate closely with transit operations, maintenance, safety teams, and external partners to maintain safe work zones.
  • Conduct regular site inspections and prepare detailed documentation, including daily reports and progress summaries.
  • Supervise and mentor field inspection staff, ensuring consistent application of quality assurance practices.
  • Review contractor schedules, track progress against milestones, and support schedule analysis and recovery strategies.
  • Evaluate change order requests and assist with cost and schedule impact assessments.
  • Facilitate construction meetings, prepare meeting minutes, and maintain organized project records.
  • Support testing, commissioning, and turnover activities to ensure systems meet operational and performance criteria.

Benefits

  • Employees at Arcadis are often offered a supportive, inclusive culture with internal mobility, extensive learning and development resources, and the flexibility to choose benefits that fit their needs (varying by country). Many roles also emphasize purpose and community—through sustainability initiatives, charitable programs like Shelter, and regular social and volunteer events—so people can grow their careers while making a positive impact.
