This role requires deep expertise in human visual perception to inform design and optimization decisions. The scientist will work at the intersection of vision science, computational modeling, and display engineering. The position involves translating psychophysical principles into engineering specifications for products used by millions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Vision Science, Visual Neuroscience, Perceptual Psychology, Optical Engineering, Color Science, or a closely related field.
  • 1+ years of applied industry research in human visual perception.
  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Vision Science, Visual Neuroscience, Perceptual Psychology, Optical Engineering, Color Science, or a closely related field.
  • Strong foundation in color science and colorimetry.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB, Python, C++, or equivalent for stimulus generation and data analysis.
  • Experience with image quality models and familiarity with optics terms.
  • Knowledge of display technologies and their perceptual trade-offs.
  • Experience leveraging machine learning frameworks for perceptual modeling tasks.
  • Proficiency with optical design and simulation tools.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and apply computational models of human vision to inform display hardware and software decisions.
  • Collaborate with display hardware engineers to optimize technology selection and product architecture.
  • Design and execute psychophysical experiments to quantify image and display quality.
  • Build and maintain lab infrastructure for controlled visual experiments.
  • Analyze experimental data using advanced statistical methods.
  • Develop and validate perceptual simulation pipelines for rapid virtual prototyping.
  • Communicate with customers and technical teams to collect requirements and describe product features.

Benefits

  • Employees at Amazon are often offered comprehensive health benefits—including multiple medical plan options (no pre-existing condition exclusions, 100% covered in-network preventive care), dental and vision plans, a 24/7 medical advice line from day one, expert second-opinion services, and broad mental-health support with several free counseling sessions (including pediatric). Financial wellness typically includes a 401(k) with company match (up to 2%), Restricted Stock Units (equity), FSAs, an emergency savings program, product and partner discounts, and even college-savings and home-purchase programs. Overall, the package is designed to support employees and their families’ health, finances, and day-to-day life.
