The Data Center Chief Engineer (CE) at Amazon is responsible for ensuring the optimal operation of electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety equipment within data centers. This role involves both preventative maintenance and emergency response to equipment issues, while also managing small-to-medium projects aimed at driving innovation and reducing operational costs. The CE will work closely with Engineering Operations Technicians and third-party vendors, ensuring adherence to safety procedures and effective communication of technical information. This position requires a strong technical background and the ability to operate independently in a fast-paced environment.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of vendor management experience
  • 4+ years of relevant work in a data center or other critical environment experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
  • Current, active US Government Security Clearance of Top Secret with SCI eligibility or above
  • 3+ years of construction or project management experience
  • Electrical or mechanical Journeyman License
  • Operating engineering license such as DC II, DC III, or equivalent
  • Experience in construction or project management
  • Experience with Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word, and Excel

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations and maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment in a data center.
  • Act as an escalation point for all facilities-related issues within the data center.
  • Perform root cause analysis of equipment failures.
  • Troubleshoot and report facility and data server-level events within internal SLA.
  • Create and deploy new standard practices for Engineering Operations Technicians and vendor support teams.
  • Provide training and guidance to Engineering Operations Technicians.
  • Ensure all safety procedures are adhered to by vendor and Amazon staff.
  • Utilize internal CMMS to manage building workflows.
  • Communicate complex technical information to a non-technical audience.

Benefits

  • Employees at Amazon are often offered comprehensive health benefits—including multiple medical plan options (no pre-existing condition exclusions, 100% covered in-network preventive care), dental and vision plans, a 24/7 medical advice line from day one, expert second-opinion services, and broad mental-health support with several free counseling sessions (including pediatric). Financial wellness typically includes a 401(k) with company match (up to 2%), Restricted Stock Units (equity), FSAs, an emergency savings program, product and partner discounts, and even college-savings and home-purchase programs. Overall, the package is designed to support employees and their families’ health, finances, and day-to-day life.
