The Principal Engineer role at AWS Database Services focuses on redefining database infrastructure for the next generation of applications. You will work with a team of accomplished engineers to tackle complex problems in a high-stakes environment. The position emphasizes building innovative solutions that enhance database performance and reliability. You will have the autonomy to shape the technical direction and strategy of your service area.

Requirements

  • A track record of technical decisions that held up at scale, under pressure, and over time.
  • Deep expertise in one or more areas such as distributed systems, database internals, or high-performance systems.
  • Experience working across organizational boundaries to drive outcomes.
  • Curiosity about how AI is changing database engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Define architecture for services that cannot go down and must scale to meet high demand.
  • Drive technical strategy across your service area, shaping the roadmap and investment decisions.
  • Solve complex distributed systems problems and performance issues.
  • Build, prototype, and ship production systems trusted by large enterprises.
  • Engage directly with customers to improve architecture based on their feedback.
  • Invent and evaluate emerging technologies to push the boundaries of managed database services.

Benefits

  • Employees at Amazon are often offered comprehensive health benefits—including multiple medical plan options (no pre-existing condition exclusions, 100% covered in-network preventive care), dental and vision plans, a 24/7 medical advice line from day one, expert second-opinion services, and broad mental-health support with several free counseling sessions (including pediatric). Financial wellness typically includes a 401(k) with company match (up to 2%), Restricted Stock Units (equity), FSAs, an emergency savings program, product and partner discounts, and even college-savings and home-purchase programs. Overall, the package is designed to support employees and their families’ health, finances, and day-to-day life.
