·FY 2025Job description
The modeling engineer role at AWS focuses on building and owning C++ models of custom SoCs that are crucial for the design, verification, and production of machine learning chips. The team collaborates closely with RTL designers and verification engineers to ensure model accuracy and support pre-silicon verification flows. This position offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of software engineering and chip design, with a direct impact on strategic silicon programs. Candidates will have the chance to influence chip design decisions as the team scales.
Requirements
- 6+ years of full software development life cycle experience, including coding standards and operations experience
- Experience as a mentor, tech lead, or leading an engineering team
- 6+ years writing functional or performance models of hardware such as SoCs, ASICs, GPUs, CPUs, or IP blocks
- Experience programming in C++ and using advanced language features
- Knowledge of SoC, CPU, GPU, and/or ASIC architecture and micro-architecture
- Experience working with DV teams or integrating models into verification flows
- Experience correlating functional models against RTL simulation, emulation, or silicon
- Experience developing and calibrating performance models for custom silicon
- Experience with SystemC, TLM, or cycle-approximate modeling methodologies
- Experience building regression and CI frameworks for model validation
- Familiarity with Modern C++ (20 and beyond)
- Experience with multi-threaded or distributed simulation
- ML accelerator architecture knowledge is a plus, but not required
Responsibilities
- Build and own models of SoC subsystems by translating architecture specs and RTL behavior into accurate, testable C++ models
- Work directly with RTL design and verification teams to validate model behavior against RTL and debug discrepancies
- Develop model-based test infrastructure including regression suites, RTL correlation checks, and coverage-driven testing
- Contribute to performance modeling efforts by building cycle-approximate models to help architects evaluate design trade-offs
- Improve modeling methodology and infrastructure regarding how models are structured, integrated, tested, and released
- Collaborate with chip architects to understand upcoming designs and plan modeling work ahead of RTL availability
Benefits
- Employees at Amazon are often offered comprehensive health benefits—including multiple medical plan options (no pre-existing condition exclusions, 100% covered in-network preventive care), dental and vision plans, a 24/7 medical advice line from day one, expert second-opinion services, and broad mental-health support with several free counseling sessions (including pediatric). Financial wellness typically includes a 401(k) with company match (up to 2%), Restricted Stock Units (equity), FSAs, an emergency savings program, product and partner discounts, and even college-savings and home-purchase programs. Overall, the package is designed to support employees and their families’ health, finances, and day-to-day life.
