Job description

As an engineer in the Special Projects group at Apple, you will be part of an innovative team focused on the intersection of simulation and AI/ML. This role involves working on ambitious projects in the early stages of development, particularly in robotics and physics simulation. The team emphasizes collaboration and values members who can quickly prototype and iterate on ideas. You will contribute to the development of simulation technology that supports AI/ML initiatives.

Requirements

  • Strong C++ development experience and Python experience
  • Solid background in robotics fundamentals including perception, planning, kinematics, dynamics, and control systems
  • Familiarity with reinforcement learning, including policy optimization and sim-to-real techniques
  • Experience with physics simulation engines such as MuJoCo, Isaac Sim, or PyBullet
  • Excellent collaboration skills with strong verbal and written communication skills
  • BS/MS/PhD in Computer Science, Robotics, or a related field, or 3+ years of equivalent experience

Responsibilities

  • Develop the core simulation engine with an emphasis on robotics and physics simulation
  • Integrate simulation software with robotics algorithms
  • Design, implement, and integrate sensor simulation and dynamics modeling for realistic robot simulation
  • Develop sim-to-real transfer techniques to bridge the gap between simulated and real-world robot behavior
  • Profile and optimize the simulation engine for high-throughput reinforcement learning training workloads
  • Design and implement reinforcement learning environments and training pipelines for robotic systems

Benefits

  • Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage. Employees also see robust time off, Apple University learning and tuition reimbursement, donation matching and paid volunteer hours, and deep product and partner discounts.
